Yerba Mate vs. Coffee, which is better?
Coffee, Yerba Mate or both? That's the question! We all have a fondness for hot and comforting beverages that provide the energy needed to start the day!
On our side, we have a small penchant for Yerba Mate leaves, simply because this unique plant does not provide the side effects usually associated with caffeine. So we thought we'd take you through the main differences between coffee and Yerba Mate.
Caffeine Level
A cup of coffee generally contains between 95 and 150 mg of caffeine, while a traditional Yerba Mate infusion, using a gourd and a bombilla, contains between 150 and 200 mg of natural caffeine (if you prepare your Yerba Mate as suggested on our preparation page).
Coffee and Yerba Mate will both give you your caffeine boost, however Mate has a key element called theobromine. This natural alkaloid balances the effect of caffeine and provides prolonged energy: no big high/crash, no heart palpitations. It is a great alternative for those of you who are sensitive to coffee, you're welcome :).
The taste, the flavors and the different ways to consume them
Coffee is known for its burst of flavors; rich and pronounced, acidity, bitterness, sweetness and even salty taste. Yerba Mate on the other hand is defined by its more natural, vegetal taste and bitterness. The beauty with mate is that we can let our imagination run wild and go in all directions.
For example:
- Adding flavors and herbs (like our Euphoria Yerba Mate Leaf with hibiscus and berry flavors)
- Create original recipes by adding fruits
- Enjoy ready-to-drink infusions
Health benefits
Coffee and Yerba Mate are known to have multiple health benefits. The mate distinguishes itself thanks to the quantity of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals naturally found in the plant. Moreover, it has been used for hundreds of years to improve energy levels and focus, without the side effects usually associated with the consumption of caffeine; such as nervousness, anxiety, palpitations or, insomnia. Mate also helps to fight mental and physical fatigue.
So there you go amigo! In any case, it's all about balance!
